The RTA is nearing the final stages of the Request for Proposal (RFP) process to choose a third-party contractor for managing ADA Eligibility Certification Evaluation Services. This is part of RTA’s continued commitment to enhancing services for our most vulnerable riders. Once selected, this new vendor will streamline the certification process for RTA’s paratransit riders. Additionally, RTA plans to upgrade its paratransit fleet and has introduced a new payment option.
This month, CEO Lona Edwards Hankins hosted tours of the Chalmette-Lower Algiers Ferry (fresh off a USCG-mandated dry dock inspection) and our historic Carrollton Streetcar Barn. The ferry visit included business leaders on both sides of the river, while the streetcar barn visit featured members of the Mayor’s Office, including the Intergovernmental Relations team. Opportunities like these allow RTA to inform our community of our workforce development initiatives, the value of our ferry and streetcar services, and how we maintain our fleet.
CEO Lona Edwards Hankins along with RTA Transit Road Supervisor, Tierrani Clark-Esteen, joined other transit leaders for RIDE New Orleans’ State of Transit Breakfast, Briefing, and Roundtable Discussion. This gathering of decision-makers, city leaders, transit riders, and community advocates provided a forum to discuss the investment our transit system needs to best serve riders, and how we can work together to make it happen.
We’re heading into the final month of hurricane season and fog season is already here! Stay weather aware of potential fog affecting our ferry service, especially in the early-morning and evening hours – which is when most service shutdowns occur. Check in with traffic reports from local media before your commute to or from your work. For additional information, please call the Rideline at (504) 248-3900, check the Le Pass app, visit norta.com/servicealerts or follow @neworleansrta on X (formerly Twitter).
The $9.7 million Algiers Ferry Terminal Renovation Project is in its final design phase. Riders can review plans and share feedback at two community meetings: an in-person session on Nov. 16 (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) at the Algiers Ferry Terminal building, and a virtual meeting on Nov. 20 (log-in details to come). Work is scheduled to begin in early 2025 and is expected to last one year.
RTA participated in the New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Mass Casualty Incident Operational Exercise, held at the Mahalia Jackson Theater in Armstrong Park. RTA assisted by transporting stabilized patients to hospitals or a reunification center. This event allowed our team to fulfill the annual full-scale exercise requirement outlined in the RTA Exercise Plan. Drop-off locations included University Medical Center, Tulane Medical Center, and Touro. RTA's role in the exercise was to alleviate the transportation load on EMS and ambulances, allowing them to focus on critically injured patients.
RTA’s “How New Orleans Rolls” banners are now up along the St. Charles Streetcar line! A big thank you to our crew for the speedy installation and to our bus operators for keeping service running smoothly during the process. We invite you to check them out by taking a ride down the Avenue. Download our Le Pass app to plan your trips and pay fares with just a few taps. The Le Pass app is available in the Apple Store and Google Play.
