City of New Orleans Pauses All Brake Tag Enforcement and Issuance for the rest of the year
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans and the New Orleans Police Department are implementing changes to vehicle inspection enforcement and administration to align with Louisiana’s new vehicle inspection law.
Effective immediately, NOPD Leadership have instructed officers have to cease the issuance of citations for a motorist's failure to display or produce a vehicle inspection sticker, commonly known as a brake tag.
This change applies only to enforcement related to brake tags and does not affect the enforcement of other traffic laws or vehicle-equipment requirements.
Further, the city is pausing the issuance of new brake tags while it works to align its vehicle inspection program with new state law. Motorists in New Orleans are no longer required to update their brake tags for the balance of 2026. Changes and new procedures for 2027 will be announced by years’ end.
“The city is currently evaluating how the new state law may affect New Orleans' separate vehicle inspection and emissions requirements,” said Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Michael Harrison. “We continue to encourage residents to properly maintain their vehicles. NOPD enforcement for other vehicle and traffic-related infractions will continue as usual. The city will announce updated procedures and provide additional details about the future vehicle inspection program later this year.”
