Mayor Moreno Responds to Louisiana Supreme Court's Denial of Rehearing in Orleans Parish Clerk of Court Case; City to Petition U.S. Supreme Court
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans acknowledges today's decision by the Louisiana Supreme Court denying the City's request for oral argument.
The Court's decision was issued in a 4-3 vote, with the same three justices opposing as in the Court's prior ruling in this matter.
“I appreciate the three Louisiana Supreme Court justices who recognized the profound constitutional questions this case presents. Their opinions underscore that this was never simply about reorganizing government, it was about protecting the right of the people to have their votes counted and given effect. They raised serious concerns about replacing an elected official with an appointed one, denying voters the opportunity to choose the new office, and resolving these issues without the benefit of full oral argument," said Mayor Helena Moreno. "Those concerns deserve careful consideration because confidence in our democracy begins with confidence that every vote matters. Accordingly, the City will seek review before the United States Supreme Court to ensure these important constitutional questions receive full consideration.”
