NOPD Reports Increase in Traffic Citations & Reduction in Fatal Crashes
New Orleans- In an effort to reduce fatal crashes and maintain safer streets in New Orleans, NOPD's Traffic Division reports a 64% increase in traffic citations so far in 2026 compared to 2025.
Over 16,000 citations have been issued in 2026 with 1,051 written last week (June 7-13, 2026).
This has led to a 20% decrease in fatal crashes year to date. In addition, NOPD's DWI Unit has seen a 22% increase in DWI arrests over 2025. In this past week alone, (June 7-13, 2026) there were 15 DWI arrests.
"These efforts are intentional. Since increasing the number of officers in our Traffic Division and providing more directive enforcement, we are making the streets of New Orleans safer which is the goal," says Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick.
