NEW ORLEANS, LA - On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, the Economic Development & Special Development Projects Committee held a meeting to review the administration's Economic Development Priorities and Special Projects for 2026 and beyond. The Committee listened to a presentation from the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, Dr. Jenny Mains, and Jeff Schwartz, the director of the Office of Housing and Community Development.
Dr. Mains addressed the Committee about the city's economic development structure, her role, and the Office of Economic Development's responsibilities. She also outlined the administration's priorities for the first 100 days, which include restoring economic confidence, streamlining permitting processes, enhancing responsiveness, activating key redevelopment projects, and more.
Next, Jeff Schwartz discussed updates on several notable Economic Development and Special Projects across the city. This included projects like the Mercy Hospital Redevelopment, the NSA Campus, River District Housing – Rivana, Lake Forest Plaza Mall, Charity Hospital, Municipal Auditorium and Armstrong Park, and the Plaza Tower Redevelopment.
The Committee recognized the progress already made on several noteworthy Economic Development and Special Projects, but also emphasized the importance of advancing with greater intentionality and urgency. Additionally, the Committee highlighted the urgent need to address blighted properties throughout the city.
