THE NEW ORLEANS FIRE DEPARTMENT (NOFD) RESPONDS TO GENTILLY RIDGE APARTMENT FIRE; RESIDENTS SHELTERED AT JOE BROWN RECREATION CENTER

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) has concluded active fire suppression efforts at the Gentilly Ridge Apartment Complex on Chef Menteur Highway following this morning’s five-alarm fire. Approximately 60 units on the west side of the complex, including the laundry room, sustained varying degrees of fire, smoke, and water damage, while several second-floor units on the east side were also impacted.

Three civilians were treated on scene, with one transported for smoke inhalation. One firefighter was treated for exhaustion and has since returned to duty. All residents were safely evacuated.

Due to the significant fire, smoke, and water damage, the affected portions of the complex are currently uninhabitable. As a result, approximately 100 residents were immediately displaced and required emergency sheltering. The New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP) is coordinating closely with the NOFD, the American Red Cross, and partner agencies to ensure residents receive shelter and support services.

Chef Menteur Highway remains blocked from Downman to Ray Avenue. Residents and commuters are asked to continue avoiding the area to ensure public safety and allow responders to complete their work.

All displaced residents have been transported to Joe Brown Recreation Center, where the American Red Cross is leading sheltering operations. The shelter will provide food, comfort, and overnight accommodations for impacted residents until longer term shelter can be identified.

At this time, the public is asked not to bring donations of supplies to either the fire scene or Joe Brown Recreation Center.

Those wishing to help are encouraged to make financial contributions, which are the most effective way to support impacted families:

  • Visit redcross.org/donate → select “My Donation” → then choose “I want to support your local Red Cross.”
  • Or mail/drop off a check payable to Southeast Louisiana Red Cross at: 2626 Canal Street New Orleans, LA 70119

All donations will go directly toward this response. For questions about donations, please contact Eric Besson at Eric.Besson@redcross.org

The City of New Orleans, the Red Cross and partners are actively working with displaced residents to assess their immediate needs and evaluate long-term housing solutions.
