FIRST HUMAN CASE OF WEST NILE VIRUS DETECTED IN ORLEANS PARISH

NEW ORLEANS — The Louisiana Department of Health reported one human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in Orleans Parish. The resident has the neuroinvasive form of the disease.

West Nile virus cycles between wild birds and mosquitoes and can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. The primary vector of West Nile virus in our region is the southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus, which is most active after dark.

While most human West Nile infections are asymptomatic, common symptoms may include headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. In rare cases, the virus can cause serious illness, especially in individuals over the age of 65 or those who are immunocompromised.

The City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board urges residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites by limiting outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, using EPA-approved insect repellents, and mosquito-proofing their homes by maintaining screens on windows and doors.

Protect Yourself

  • Use repellents containing EPA-registered active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Always follow product instructions when using repellents.
  • When possible, limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Use air conditioning or sit in the airflow of a fan when outdoors.
