NEW ORLEANS — Councilman Green is proud to announce that the Desire-Florida Multi-Service Recreation Center will soon be transformed into a Community Resilience Hub, equipped with solar panels, battery storage, and backup power capabilities to support residents during emergencies and power outages.
Thanks to a successful proposal submitted by the City’s Office of Resilience and Sustainability, the Desire-Florida Rec Center was included in a Community Development Block Grant funding package to the Louisiana Office of Community Development. The State has approved $287,000 to fully fund this critical investment. “This is great news for District D and for New Orleans as a whole,” said Councilman Green. “The Desire-Florida Recreation Center will not only continue to serve our community as a hub for recreation and services, but will now be better equipped to support our residents during times of crisis.”
The transformation of the Desire-Florida Center into a resilience hub is part of a broader citywide effort to expand climate preparedness, strengthen infrastructure, and ensure equitable access to resources before, during, and after disasters.
The $4.9 million modern facility, opened in June 15, 2023, replaces the one destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Designed for stormwater resilience and energy efficiency, the space offers year‑round programs, from chorus and dance to fitness classes, serving children, seniors, and the broader community.
The center is open Monday through Saturday, helping bridge two historic neighborhoods.
