NEW ORLEANS — Councilman Green commends the New Orleans Police Department and supporting agencies for their use of surveillance technology in response to two recent public safety incidents that have drawn citywide concern: the armed robbery near Royal and St. Peter Streets in the French Quarter and the escape of ten inmates from the Orleans Parish Justice Center.
In the early hours of the French Quarter robbery on July 31, NOPD officers arrived on the scene within minutes. Investigators obtained surveillance footage from surrounding cameras, which captured images of the three female suspects and revealed a connection to a larger theft ring operating in the area. While the suspects have not yet been apprehended, the video footage has provided key leads to support the ongoing investigation.
Just weeks earlier, on May 16, after ten inmates escaped the Orleans Parish jail, Kendell Myles was located and arrested in the French Quarter later that day, thanks in part to real-time surveillance footage provided by Project NOLA, which includes facial recognition technology in limited high-crime areas.
“These events highlight the critical role of technology in helping law enforcement respond to dangerous situations,” said Councilman Eugene Green. “From pursuing suspects in violent crimes to recapturing fugitives, surveillance tools—when used responsibly—can support the work of dedicated officers and protect our neighborhoods.”
Councilman Green reiterated his support for continued investment in surveillance infrastructure and support for aiding legislation, along with strong civil liberties safeguards.
“We will continue working toward a safer New Orleans through innovation, accountability, and collaboration,” Green added.
