City of New Orleans to Activate Additional School Zone Flashing Beacons

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW) is set to activate school zone flashing beacons at three additional locations starting Thursday, Oct. 17. This phased activation is part of the City’s commitment to ensuring school zones comply with state law and promote safety for students and drivers.
The DPW Sign Shop and Traffic Teams have been working diligently to bring school zones into compliance with Act No. 103, which mandates that school zone cameras operate only during specific times: one hour before and one hour after the beginning of the school day, and one hour before and one hour after the end of the school day. The City is currently reprogramming flashing beacons and updating signage at all school zones citywide.
The following school zone flashers will be activated as part of this phase:
-
Westbound Opelousas Avenue at Oliver Street
-
Westbound 9800 block of Hammond Street
-
Eastbound 1400 block of Camp Street at International School
Motorists are reminded to exercise caution and adhere to posted speed limits in these zones during the designated times. Speeding violations in school zones will result in citations. Ensuring school zone safety remains a top priority for the City.
Residents can stay informed about active school zones, camera operations, and school zone hours by visiting https://nola.gov/get-school-zone-times. Any school zone citations issued outside the legal hours will be dismissed, and residents with questions about a ticket are encouraged to contact the Parking Adjudication Office at parkingadjudication@nola.gov for assistance.
DPW will continue to provide public updates as more school zone cameras are activated.
