City of New Orleans Announces Activation of New Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons

Beacon System

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today announced the activation of a new traffic signal commonly referred to as a pedestrian hybrid beacon signal located in the 400 block of North Carrollton Avenue.  The new beacons will replace the former rapid flashing beacon system that has been in place since 2015.

Currently, drivers and pedestrians will notice that the new system is operating in a flashing mode. This is consistent with standard protocol and is intended to alert motorists of the presence of the beacon. The new beacon will be fully operational on Monday, Oct.16.

During the flashing period, pedestrians and bikers are expected to continue to use the existing rapid flashing beacons that are still in place.

What To Expect Once the System is Fully Operational:

  • Motorists traveling on North Carrollton Avenue should expect the beacons to light up when a trail user has pressed the activation button on the sidewalk indicating a need to cross the street
  • Unlike the previous flashing beacon system, the new beacons will cycle to an all red phase after a few seconds and motorists are required to come to a full stop

The implementation of pedestrian hybrid beacons underscores the City’s commitment to pedestrian and biker safety. Residents can visit https://nola.gov/next/public-works/programs/mobility-and-safety/pedestrian-safety/ for more information.
