City of New Orleans, Partners Announce Participation in World Cleanup Day

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today announced it will join other local government and nonprofit partners in a cleanup event in the Broadmoor neighborhood in celebration of World Cleanup Day this Saturday, Sept. 16.

“The City of New Orleans' participation in World Cleanup Day demonstrates not only my administration's commitment to cleaning up this city but also us being a global leader in environmental initiatives that lead to greener, healthier and more sustainable communities,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “Participating in this initiative locally is another way we are targeting the elimination of litter and debris that clog our catch basins, which are essential to preventing street flooding and strengthening our resiliency. I encourage volunteers to sign up and take part in helping us make positive progress towards a cleaner, safer and more vibrant city.”

Each year, World Cleanup Day unites millions of volunteers, governments and organizations in 197 countries and territories to clean up litter and other solid waste from beaches, streams and neighborhoods. New Orleans will now be counted in that number with the launch of the City’s inaugural World Cleanup Day event.

The Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS), Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO), Keep New Orleans Beautiful and the Broadmoor Improvement Association are piloting this program throughout the Broadmoor neighborhood with an eye towards making this a citywide event in the future. Volunteers will pick up litter, clear debris from catch basins and use newly developed software to monitor the condition of catch basins, thereby providing important information for the city.

The City’s World Cleanup Day will begin at 8 a.m., starting at the Broadmoor Arts and Wellness Center (3900 General Taylor St.) and will spread out into the surrounding area until 11 a.m.

“The Sewerage and Water Board is proud to partner in this World Clean Up Day effort,” said SWBNO Executive Director Ghassan Korban. “If litter ends up in the drainage system, it impedes the drainage infrastructure. Not only are we beautifying our community, but we are instilling a sense of responsibility, ownership and stewardship in our city.”

“Broadmoor is proud to participate in community events like World Cleanup Day,” said Director of Operations for the Broadmoor Improvement Association Kanako Asai. “Our volunteer efforts to beautify the neighborhood serve as a reminder for all New Orleans residents to keep our streets clean of litter. In a city that is prone to flooding, it is especially important to clear catch basins of debris during hurricane season.”

“My office has been committed to improving the quality of life for residents and helping to clean up the district,” said District B Councilmember Lesli Harris. “We have completed three District B Neighborhood Clean Up Days in partnership with City departments and neighborhood leaders, and my office is ready for the fourth District B Neighborhood Clean Up Day on Nov. 4. I am excited to see World Clean Up Day start in the Broadmoor neighborhood, as we continue to build upon this hard work and progress.”
