MAYOR CANTRELL CELEBRATES THE ESTABLISHMENT OF XAVIER UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA'S COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell today issued the following statement congratulating Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health on their joint partnership to establish the Xavier University College of Medicine:

"The City of New Orleans proudly and fully welcomes Tuesday's announcement that two of our leading institutions, Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health, have entered into an agreement to establish a joint College of Medicine," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell.

"Our historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) make great contributions to our city year after year. Specifically, Xavier is an exceptional institution that educates some of the best and brightest, repeatedly being recognized as a national leader in sciences and liberal arts. The formation of this partnership will further expand both New Orleans and Xavier as an academic center for the nation, building upon our rich community of higher education institutions and attracting students globally. It will also give youth in our community an aspirational goal that is within their reach.

Creating and retaining a diverse physician workforce is crucial not just for our city but for the State of Louisiana, as we learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. The creation of an HBCU medical school in our community will attract students globally, address the longstanding inequities within our healthcare system and strengthen the healthcare workforce while positively impacting the local economy. As a proud Xavier alumna, I am proud to support this endeavor and look forward to ushering a new age of healthcare into the City of New Orleans."
