TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Temporary Road Closure on 5500 Elysian Fields Avenue
NEW ORLEANS — Beginning on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022, between 6 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW) contractor, Command Construction Industries, LLC, will temporarily close the 5500 block of Elysian Fields Avenue to northbound vehicular traffic.
Immediately following, a single travel lane will re-open to northbound traffic beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday evening. Detours and road closures will remain in effect until Monday, Oct. 17, 2022, when the 5500 block of Elysian Fields Avenue will fully re-open to northbound traffic. These closures are required to accommodate paving operations as part of the Milneburg Group A project. Public safety is our priority; signage and a flagman will be in place to direct traffic.
During this temporary closure, large vehicles such as buses and heavy trucks heading northbound on Elysian Fields Avenue will be detoured onto Filmore Avenue (eastbound), then directed to turn left turn on Franklin Avenue (northbound), and then to Allen Toussaint Boulevard. Small cars and light vehicles will be detoured onto Elysian Fields Avenue (northbound), then directed to turn right onto Odin Street where they will turn left onto Mendez Street and continue on to Elysian Fields Avenue. Residents and businesses in this area were notified of the closure through a neighborhood canvass.
The Milneburg Group A project was designed by Mott MacDonald, Inc. and is being constructed by Command Construction Industries, LLC. The scope of work varies by block but includes repairing sewage, water and drainage lines, rebuilding the street entirely and repairing sidewalks and curbs. In general, the contractor is working from 7 a.m. until sunset, Monday through Friday. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by the winter of 2023, weather permitting.
