NEW ORLEANS — The Mayor’s Office of Transportation and the Department of Public Works this week hosted two engaging and well-attended pre-construction meetings as part of the Moving New Orleans Bikes (MNOB) initiative. Attended by more than 140 people, both meetings summarized public feedback gathered since the conceptual design public meetings hosted in October and November 2020, described how this feedback has been incorporated into the designs, and provided an opportunity for additional questions and feedback.

The meetings were coordinated by the Neighborhood Engagement Office.

One attendee shared their excitement for the proposal: “[W]ith these planned changes, I believe that biking to or through the CBD will be both more safe and more comfortable. Thank you for working through these plans! I especially love the use of curbs for protection.”

Part of the City’s overall Moving New Orleans Transportation Action Plan, the Moving New Orleans Bikes initiative seeks to improve safety, access and connectivity for residents bicycling for transportation. Following a robust public engagement process, the Citywide Bikeway Blueprint was developed and published in 2019, followed by an accelerated implementation aiming to construct 75 miles of bikeways over two years. Following a Complete Streets approach, these projects include other roadway improvements to balance the needs and improve safety for all roadway users: people walking, bicycling, taking transit, and driving.

"We are not just improving the road for people bicycling, but for all other modes, and improving stormwater management and other elements along the way. A big 'thank you' to the community for collaborating with us through this process, and to the Neighborhood Engagement Office and RoadWork NOLA teams who helped with these meetings,” said Laura Bryan, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Transportation.

The Feb. 23 meeting covered proposed designs for six corridors in the 7th Ward, Faubourg St. John, St. Roch, Gentilly and Mid-City neighborhoods:

  • Bienville Avenue (North Norman C. Francis Parkway to North Carrollton Avenue)
  • Gentilly Boulevard (North Broad Street to New Orleans Street)
  • North Galvez Street (Orleans Avenue to Franklin Avenue)
  • North Miro Street (Franklin Avenue to Orleans Avenue)
  • Paris Avenue (I-610 to Filmore Avenue)
  • Ursulines Avenue (North Claiborne Avenue to Hagan Avenue)

The Feb. 25 meeting covered proposed designs for three corridors in the Central Business District and Warehouse District:

  • Baronne Street (Canal Street to Howard Avenue)
  • Howard Avenue (Street Charles Avenue to Loyola Avenue)
  • O’Keefe Avenue (Howard Avenue to Canal Street)

Construction on these projects will begin in the Spring and Summer of 2021. To learn more about MNOB and to view the presentations from this week’s meetings and all previous meetings, visit www.nola.gov/MNOB.
