TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Drainage Improvements, Temporary Detours to Begin on Lafitte Greenway between N. Rendon and N. White Streets in Early June

NEW ORLEANS — Beginning in early June, City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works contractor Command Construction Inc. will implement a series of detours along the Lafitte Greenway to accommodate construction crews that will be tying in new, upsized drainage lines into the St. Louis Canal. This work, which is part of the Hagan-Lafitte Drainage Upgrades and Green Infrastructure Project, will be wrapped up in August.

Public safety is our priority; crews will be flagging traffic through the area around barricades onto the temporary surface during the day and additional lighting will be set up in the evening to help guide traffic until the path is fully restored.

The detours, which are approximately 70 feet in length and nine feet in width, will be implemented consecutively. Crews will begin near the intersection of North White Street and the Lafitte Greenway. Once that work is completed, crews will move to the intersection of North Gayoso Street, then onto North Lopez Street and finally onto North Rendon Street.

This temporary disruption of services is part of the $7.3 million Hagan Lafitte Drainage Upgrades and Green Infrastructure project. The project is a combination of green and gray infrastructure improvements to the 27-block area that includes Easton Park. Underground storage tanks with a network of interventions along streets connected to new subsurface drainage pipes are being placed to slow and store storm water.

These strategies reduce the burden on the strained drainage system, reduce land subsidence, and improve water quality — all while beautifying the neighborhood. When complete in fall 2020, this Hazard Mitigation Grant-funded project will reduce localized flooding by storing up to 1.3 million gallons of storm water.
