City to Begin Additional $2.5 Million in Road

Improvement Projects on the Westbank

NEW ORLEANS  Tomorrow, the City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works will begin two improvement projects on the Westbank. The short-term projects will be completed by City maintenance contractor Hard Rock Construction, LLC. Public safety is our priority; commuters are asked to be mindful of workers and to plan for additional travel time.

General Meyer Avenue

On General Meyer Avenue between Sullen Place and Bennett Street, crews will install new concrete panels to help improve traffic flow. There will be intermittent closures on General Meyer Avenue throughout construction and the $1.25 million bond-funded project will take approximately two months to complete, weather permitting.

Wall Boulevard

In preparation for improvements under the City’s Moving New Orleans Bikes Initiative, crews will replace concrete panels and joints on Wall Boulevard between General De Gaulle Drive and Holiday Drive. The $1.25 million bond-funded project will take approximately two months to complete, weather permitting. No lane closures will be required, however lane shifts will be utilized during construction.

Moving New Orleans Bikes Algiers

The total $4 million Moving New Orleans Bikes – Algiers project will include upgrades such as protected bike lanes, bus stop improvements, high visibility crosswalks, bike boulevards, and pedestrian signals. Additional street repairs, striping and signage, signal improvements, and short shared-use trail connections will be constructed on 11 miles of city and state streets: Mardi Gras Boulevard; Florence Street; Newton Street; Lawrence Street; Holiday Drive; MacArthur Boulevard; Wall Boulevard; Westbend Parkway; Woodland Drive; Garden Oaks Drive and Odeon Street. The entire project is scheduled to be complete in spring 2020.

The Department of Public Works kicked off three other maintenance projects on the Westbank in December 2019 worth approximately $2 million. The projects on Herschel Drive and Tullis Drive have been completed; the third project on Garden Oaks Drive will be finished this month.
