NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell today issued the following statement on the return of RTA's ferry service to Algiers through a charter company:

“This was the necessary and appropriate step to ensuring our residents have the ferry service they deserve. Now we are focused on getting our new boats officially in the water, and we continue to do our due diligence to ensure they are safe and ready to go. I want to commend the RTA for their leadership in securing the ferry charter service as an interim step, and their dedication to this issue," said Mayor Cantrell. "The City stands ready to support RTA with any emergency funding needed to ensure smooth and efficient operations as we all work to rectify the situation.”

As of this morning (Monday, Dec. 16), the RTA ferry service between Canal and Algiers was officially back on schedule. The RTA Board awarded the ferry operations contract to to Labmar in a special RTA Board meeting last week. The charter boat, the Margaret Lab, entered into service yesterday afternoon, providing rides on a modified schedule, and returned to normal schedule this morning at 6 a.m. Mayor Cantrell, RTA CEO Alex Wiggins and Board Chair Flozell Daniels, Jr. continue to work to improve ferry services for all of our residents.

Laura Bryan (Director of the Mayor's Office of Transportation) and Arthur Walton (Director of Intergovernmental Relations) serve on the RTA Board.

More details will be coming soon. See the RTA's ferry schedule here. Follow RTA on Twitter at @NewOrleansRTA.
