City to Begin More Than $2.5M in Infrastructure
Improvement Projects Next Month
NEW ORLEANS – Beginning the week of Dec. 2-6, the City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works will begin improvement projects in four neighborhoods across the city. The short-term projects, which will be completed by city maintenance contractor Hard Rock Construction, LLC, are on the Westbank, in New Orleans East and in the Downtown Development District. Work includes concrete panel replacements, upsized drainage, permeable pavement and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps. Public safety is our priority; commuters are asked to be mindful of workers and to plan for additional travel time in these areas.
Westbank
On Tullis Drive, new concrete panels will be installed in the 6900-7000 blocks; this work will require a temporary road closure between Lancaster Street and Blair Street. The approximately $325,000 improvements are city funded; work will take approximately 30 days to complete.
On the 4200 block of Herschel Drive, improvements include new concrete and curbs, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps, as well as street width and length of driveways adjustments. Herschel Drive will be closed between Kabel Drive and Hyman Place for the duration of the project. The approximately $145,000 improvements are city funded; work will take approximately 30 days to complete.
On Garden Oaks Drive, new concrete panels, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps will be installed as part of the Moving New Orleans Bikes – Algiers project. There will be intermittent closures on Garden Oaks Drive throughout construction. The $1.2 million improvements are city funded; work will take approximately two months to complete.
The total $4 million Moving New Orleans Bikes – Algiers project will also include bus stop improvements, one-way protected bike lanes in each direction, high visibility crosswalks and pedestrian signals. Additional street repairs, striping and signage, signal improvements and a shared use path will be constructed on 11 miles of city and state streets: Mardi Gras Boulevard; Florence Street; Newton Street; Lawrence Street; Holiday Drive; MacArthur Boulevard; Wall Boulevard; Westbend Parkway; Woodland Drive; Garden Oaks Drive and Odeon Street. The entire project is scheduled to be complete in spring 2020.
New Orleans East
In response to localized flooding on Murano Road, a new, upsized drainage line will be installed in the 4300-4600 blocks. This work will require a temporary partial road closure; however, blocks will be open to local traffic so that residents can access their homes and driveways during construction.
The $425,000 improvements are city funded; work will take approximately 30 days to complete.
Downtown Development District
In response to localized flooding on Union Street, a combination of green and gray infrastructure will be constructed between St. Charles Avenue and Carondelet Street. The project, which is designed to reduce localized flooding, includes a combination of green (permeable pavement) and gray (traditional) infrastructure improvements. Crews will begin by installing a new, upsized drainage line in the roadway, followed by a pervious (allows storm water to move through) concrete parking lane with perforated pipe underneath and then new sidewalks. This work will require a full closure of the roadway between St. Charles Avenue and Carondelet Street; pedestrians will be able to use the sidewalks until the roadway is completed.
The approximately $445,000 improvements are city funded; work will take approximately two months to complete.
A future maintenance project that involves concrete panel replacements will begin in early 2020 on General Meyer Avenue between Sullen Place and Bennett Street. This project will likely require lane closures.
