Roadway Improvements Begin

Orleans Marconi

NEW ORLEANS — This morning the City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works (DPW) and Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) begin work on a nearly $3 million, federally funded roadway rehabilitation project that will improve Marconi Drive/Orleans Avenue between City Park Avenue and Zachary Taylor Drive.

City representatives began canvassing the area on Marconi Drive earlier this week to distribute information about the project and its impacts.

DPW and DOTD have worked closely with Delgado Community College and City Park (Tad Gormley Stadium) to coordinate parking and access to the college and the stadium, including during weekend high school football games. Based upon these discussions, the contractor, Hard Rock Construction, will not be working on the following days due to afternoon sporting events:

  • Oct. 18
  • Oct. 26
  • Nov. 2
  • Nov. 9

During construction, there will be one travel lane open in each direction at all times; however, there will be no parking on both sides of Marconi Drive/Orleans Avenue. Signage and parking instructions will be visibly posted throughout the duration of the project.

The scope of work includes:

  • Repairing some damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons;
  • Repaving the roadway with asphalt and/or concrete;
  • Installing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps at intersections and new high-visibility crosswalks;
  • Installing a new two-way protected bike lane on Marconi Drive alongside City Park;
  • Installing a new river-bound protected bike lane on Orleans Avenue alongside Delgado Community College;
  • Reconfiguring the roadway on Marconi Drive from two travel lanes and one parking lane to: one travel lane, one parking lane and one two-way protected bike lane;
  • Reconfiguring the roadway on Orleans Avenue from two travel lanes and one parking lane to: one travel lane, one parking lane and one protected bike lane; and
  • Constructing a new ADA-compliant bus loading island on Marconi Drive and Orleans Avenue.

Weather permitting, crews will be wrapped up in late November. The contractor will be working Monday-Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Questions and/or concerns about the project may be directed Roadwork NOLA at 504.658.ROAD (7623) or roadwork@nola.gov.
