'Let's Move Forward Algiers!'

Lets Move Forward Algiers

NEW ORLEANS — Officials from the City of New Orleans will join other City and community leaders on Saturday morning to help celebrate the kickoff to Let's Move Forward Algiers!, a community festival.

The festival will run from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Behrman Memorial Park in Algiers.

“The road forward to improved transportation options in New Orleans starts in Algiers,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “We’re excited about the work we’re doing with our Office of Transportation, especially our Moving New Orleans Bikes plan, in coordination with our partners in the New Orleans Complete Streets Coalition. Working together, we’re making it easier, safer and more equitable when trying to bike, walk, drive, ride the bus or take the ferry. I want to thank the members of the community for their encouraging feedback, it shows that we’re taking the right steps to move this city forward.”

Deputy CAO for Infrastructure Ramsey Green and Office of Transportation Policy and Program Manager Dan Jatres will join District C City Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer. They will be joined by Derrick Martin of the Algiers Economic Development Foundation, Onika Jervis of GirlTrek, David Green of Lighthouse Louisiana, and Dan Favre of Bike Easy. At the press conference, they will:

  • Release opinion polling research results from Dr. Silas Lee & Associates that show strong public support,
  • Describe the education and activation components of Let's Move Forward, and
  • Detail the many changes currently underway to improve biking, walking and other transportation options for Algiers and the entire City of New Orleans.

Festival-goers will get the opportunity to enjoy free food and fitness classes, kid-friendly bike events, giveaways, walking and biking tours and demonstrations designed to show residents how improved roadways increase safety and quality-of-life for all.

At noon, there will be a "battle of the bands" featuring Martin Behrman Charter School and SciTech Academy.

The festival is part of the launch for Let's Move Forward, a community-lead effort to highlight the benefits of improving transportation options and building streets that are safe and accessible for people of all abilities in New Orleans, whether traveling by car, bike, foot, or transit.
