CITY OF NEW ORLEANS REMINDS RESIDENTS

OF NEW BIKE-LANE PARKING FINE INCREASE

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans is preparing for the impending enforcement of the increased fine for motorists who illegally park in designated bike lanes, as approved by the City Council.

“We have been consistent in making public safety a top priority of this administration, and residents need to know that the stakes of improper parking in lanes for bicyclists are going to start getting higher this month,” Office of Transportation Director Laura Bryan said.

Mayor Cantrell approved the addition of warning slips to current violators of the law when they’ve been handed $40 tickets, notifying violators that the increased fine of $300 would be enforced starting this month.

Earlier this month Mayor Cantrell reminded residents that transportation projects are ramping up, “We are all traffic,” and that improper transportation behavior will not be tolerated by anyone – bicyclists, motorists, pedestrians or transit riders. She also highlighted several rules of the road to help inform residents of best practices. One of those projects includes an expanded and more protected bike network; open house workshops on this plan continue this week in District C, District D and District E.

Mayor Cantrell also has warned charter party carriers, or operators of “party buses,” will need to be in proper compliance with licensing and permits and will need to be properly insured.
