TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Temporary Detour on Palmetto St. and Drexel Dr. between Pine and Short streets

NEW ORLEANS — On Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 8 a.m., the City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works’ construction contractor, Hard Rock Construction, LLC will begin removing the old Washington Avenue Pedestrian Bridge near Xavier University of Louisiana. The old bridge is no longer necessary now that the new, nearly $3 million Washington Avenue Pedestrian Bridge is in place.

Through traffic on Palmetto Street and Drexel Drive will be detoured at Pine and Short streets onto Washington Avenue while a crane is moved into place for the removal activities. The detour will last through the end of the day.

An identical detour will be implemented again from Monday, Nov. 26–Friday, Nov. 30, weather permitting, to complete removal of the bridge.

Commuters, residents and cyclists are asked to be mindful of construction workers and to travel at reduced speeds through the project limits.

The City completed the new Washington Avenue Pedestrian Bridge, an elevated pedestrian crossing over Washington Avenue, the Washington Avenue Drainage Canal and Drexel Drive in 2017. The new bridge was designed by Burk Kleinpeter, LLC and built by Command Construction Industries, LLC.

Questions about this project may be directed to the City’s RoadworkNOLA hotline at 504-658-ROAD or RoadWork.nola.gov.
