The annual Neighborhood Summit celebrates the strength, history, and diversity of our city's neighborhoods, bringing together community leaders, non-profit agencies, and city government. Neighborhood leaders and residents will have the opportunity to share information across communities, develop new skills to bring home, and build relationships old and new.

We had the chance to sit down and chat with Betty Dimarco and Mary Green, who serve as co-facilitators of the Carrollton United organization. Carrollton United was originally formed as a way for black and white residents from different Carrollton-area neighborhoods to get to know one another.

Neighborhood Leaders Roundtable Wrap-Up
On Saturday, September 22nd, the Mayor’s
Neighborhood Engagement Office hosted the 2018 3rd Quarter
Neighborhood Leaders Roundtable. The theme for this Roundtable was City Infrastructure.
Ramsey Green (Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of
Infrastructure), Warren Jones (Interim Director for the Department of Public
Works), and Ghassan Korban (newly appointed Executive Director of the Sewerage
and Water Board) all spoke to neighborhood leaders on the administration’s priorities
for tackling New Orleans’ infrastructural issues. Additional presentations
included an overview of the Big Easy Budget Game (courtesy of Committee for a
Better New Orleans), Connect the Crescent, and the administration’s newly
launched Digital Equity Campaign. The Roundtable concluded with a question and
answer session in which neighborhood leaders had the chance to share questions,
comments, and concerns with our guest speakers.

Adopt-a-Catch Basin: Upcoming Clean-Up Days
The Department of Public Works’ maintenance department is responsible for cleaning and clearing catch basins of debris. There are 68,092 catch basins in the City. Each year the City budgets resources to clean approximately 3,500 catch basins.
In an effort to engage residents in the Clean Up NOLA initiative, the Mayor’s Neighborhood Engagement Office will be hosting a series of Catch Basin Cleaning Days in each Council District every Saturday through the month of October and first week of November.

Mayor Cantrell hosting "Tell Cantrell Budget Listening Sessions"
On Wednesday, October 4th, Mayor Latoya Cantrell hosted her first "Tell Cantrell Budget Listening Session" via telephone. Residents from Council Districts A, B, and C were able to call in and express their thoughts and concerns on matters related to infrastructure, public safety, sanitation, and more.
Mayor Cantrell will be hosting the Session for Council Districts D and E on Wednesday, October 10th.

Fall 2018 Civic Leadership Academy
On Wednesday, September 19th, we were thrilled to
welcome the Fall 2018 cohort of the Civic Leadership Academy.
The Civic Leadership Academy (CLA) is an engaging 8 week
program that provides residents with an in-depth look at City government. Guest
speakers thus far have included City Councilmembers Kristin Palmer (District C)
and Joseph Giarrusso (District A), John Pourciau (Chief of Staff to Mayor
Latoya Cantrell), and Warren Jones (Interim Director of the Department of
Public Works). Topics covered in the coming weeks will include Public Safety,
Emergency Preparedness and Response, and more.
Presentations from guest speakers in addition to tours and
activities help provide participants with an insider view of how the City of
New Orleans operates. With this knowledge, participants will be better equipped
to lead collective action towards the advancement of neighborhoods and
residents’ quality of life.
First Inaugural Family Fest
The Mayor’s Office of Youth and Families hosted the first
inaugural Family Fest at St. Roch Playground on September 29th. The
event, hosted by DJ Wild Wayne, featured a number of entertainers including
Keedy Black, Roots of Music, and the Youth Empowerment Project Band. Over 50
community organizations attended and provided families with information about
their services and resources. It was a great success and we look forward to
engaging our community in the future.

Community Office Hours Update
We will continue to be located in your communities at NORD recreation centers from 10:30am-2:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, through the end of October. We will then return in January.
Community Office Hours enables City Hall to be accessible and helpful to more residents within neighborhoods. This effort creates a two-way street of effective communication and information flow for addressing neighborhood level issues.

National Fire Prevention Week: LOOK. LISTEN. LEARN.
October 7th through 13th is National Fire
Prevention Week. The subject of this
year’s campaign is “Look. Listen. Learn. Be Aware, Fire Can Happen
Anywhere”.
Superintendent McConnell and
the men and women of the New Orleans Fire Department will be promoting Fire
Prevention and Awareness throughout the entire month of October with the goal
of Fire Safety being emphasized year round by every citizen of New Orleans.

The New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) would like to remind residents that “Smoke Alarms Save Lives”. 5k Walk/Run for Education: Saturday, October 13th
The 31st Annual New Orleans Walk/Run for Education has become an anticipated family-oriented 5K (3.1 mile) walk and certified run for corporate teams, fraternities, sororities, groups, churches, organizations and individuals who realize that "a mind is a terrible thing to waste"® and understand the importance of "giving back."

Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) is celebrating 30 years
of providing quality medical and dental services to the Greater New Orleans
(GNO) area! Come help us celebrate as we host a month-long health fair in
October, HEALTH-TOBER 2018.
Each week in October, a different health topic will be
discussed (such as Cancer Awareness, Heart Health and Wellness, Sexual Health
and Preventable Illness, and Mental Health/Substance Abuse).
Local community organizations and businesses will be
providing educational materials, health screenings, demonstrations, giveaways,
and more at our Central City/Edna Pilsbury clinic location Monday through
Thursday! There will also be free giveaways at the downtown Community Resource
and Referral Center (CRRC) on Fridays.
Be sure to stop by to learn how to advocate for your health.
