MAYOR CANTRELL SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER ADOPTING
BEST PRACTICES IN BUDGETING PROCESS

NEW ORLEANS — Thursday, Mayor LaToya Cantrell signed an executive order to adopt national best practices in the City's budgeting process.

Executive Order LC 18-06 seeks to produce a budget with descriptive information to ensure citizens can understand the sources of revenues and uses of expenditures; to accomplish a budget based on sound economic forecasts; and work cooperatively throughout the year to ensure the City Council receives monthly information relative to revenues and expenditures of the City.

"The budgeting process is vital to every aspect of our City -- its sustainability, its growth and its trajectory,” said Mayor Cantrell. “We have to be intentional and strategic about how we spend the people’s money. That means properly funding the City’s priorities, many of which were outlined in the transition report. The people of New Orleans want and deserve to know how their hard-earned dollars are being allocated. Transparency and accountability are paramount. I'm looking forward to engaging with the City Council in a productive budgeting process.”

Executive Order LC 18-06 (https://nola.gov/mayor/executive-orders/executive-orders/lc-18-06-budgeting/) provides for the Revenue Estimating Conference to meet more frequently than required by the Home Rule Charter, maintains City Council representation of the Revenue Estimating Conference, and provides monthly submittals of revenue and expenditure data to the City Council by the Administration.

The operating and executive capital budgets must be submitted by the Mayor to the City Council no later than Nov. 1.
