City to Host Paper Shredding Event as
Glass and Compost Collections Continue
NEW ORLEANS — On
Saturday, July 14, 2018, the City of New Orleans Department of Sanitation will
host a paper shredding event in
conjunction with Iron Mountain from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the City’s Recycling Drop-Off Center located at 2829 Elysian Fields
Ave.
Four times a year Orleans Parish hosts shredding days. Residents can bring up to 50 pounds of personal or sensitive documents to be
shredded safely and securely by Iron Mountain's on-site mobile unit. Iron Mountain accepts mixed office
paper, light cardboard and similar materials. They do not accept plastic, compact discs, DVDs or metal (other than paper clips or
staples).
The Department of Sanitation, in conjunction with The Composting Network, will continue to
accept frozen food scraps from residents to be composted. Compost will only be accepted from private residences (not businesses). The Composting Network accepts fruit and vegetable scraps (peels, skins, pits or seeds), tea bags, coffee grounds (including paper filters), eggshells, nutshells, seed shells,
plain bread, grains and plain pasta (no toppings). They do not accept meat,
dairy, bones or foods with oil.
Iron Mountain and The Composting Network offer their services at no cost to the public in conjunction with the City’s recycling drop-off events.
On the
second Saturday of each month, Orleans Parish residents can drop off:
- Paper
products including newspapers, junk mail, phone books, catalogs, office paper and color
inserts
- Plastics #1 through #7, such as water bottles, soda bottles, juice bottles, detergent containers, plastic pots
from nurseries, plastic bags, etc.
- Aluminum, tin and steel cans
- Cardboard
- Box board (cereal boxes)
- Mardi Gras beads
- Batteries (AA, AAA, AAAA,
C, D, 6-volt, 9-volt and lithium)
- Light bulbs (incandescent and fluorescent)
- Electronics such as computers, laptops, phones, televisions (limit 4) and microwave ovens (limit 4)
- Tires (limit 4)
- Glass (limit 50 lbs.)
- Designated organics for composting
The Department of Sanitation has resumed the collection of glass. Please remove caps and corks before recycling.
Since
the City opened the Recycling Drop-Off Center in August 2010, a total of
1,183 tons have been recycled. Since the current curbside recycling
program began in May 2011, a total of 48,250 tons have been
recycled. Properties that are eligible to receive solid waste collection
by the City are also eligible to receive free recycling services.
