NOPD
TAKES 30 GUNS OFF THE STREET DURING 2016 MARDI GRAS PATROLS
NEW ORLEANS-NOPD officers confiscated
30 guns over the past 12 days through aggressive proactive patrols on or near
the parade route this Mardi Gras season. The gun confiscations and subsequent
arrests were a direct result of a strong public safety plan implemented with
help from local, state and federal law enforcement partners.
"We had a zero tolerance policy for anyone who made the
decision to bring a weapon to Carnival and put our residents and visitors in
danger, and our results show it," said NOPD Superintendent Michael
Harrison. "Over the past 12 days, our officers have shown focused and
impressive police work that undoubtedly prevented violent situations from happening.
I commend the work of the men and women of the NOPD and thank our law
enforcement partners for their assistance. We are committed to continuing this
aggressive and proactive approach throughout the year."
NOPD started working at 100 percent staffing levels on January 29,
2016 as part of the public safety plan. All officers assigned to parade routes
worked at least 8 hours a day. All officers assigned to work in police
