On August 2, 2022, Cynthia Grimes hosted the first "Adulting in Baker" event that taught basic life skills preparedness for high school juniors and seniors.
Several organizations came out to prepare these young adults with expertise that would shape them for real-world experiences. City of Baker's Central Garage, Lane Regional Medical Center, Baker and Zachary Alumnae of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., the Baker Presbyterian Chruch Food Pantry, ViaLink, East Baton Rouge Parish Library, the YMCA, the Baker Main Street Pilot Club and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity - Omicron Beta Sigma Chapter of Baton Rouge as well as Councilman Robert Young who came to share his expertise.
Cedric Marshall demonstrated how to change a tire, checking the oil stick and the importance of not taking the cap off a hot radiator. Katelyn Lamy educated them about nutrition services available through Lane Regional Medical Service as well as healthy eating habits. Vennetta Hayes taught dinner etiquette training while both Angela Lockett and Christine Richardson informed them on how to properly use databases that could help them tackle things like homework, research, and career searches. Darren Mulligan informed them of various YMCA programs such as the My Brother's Keeper Alliance, Youth Sports and Youth & Government. Councilman Young educated the young adults on financial success while Richard Lee IV, Kirby Gordon and Barry Robinson taught them how to properly wear a tie. Barbara LaCoste taught them how to properly sew on a button onto clothes and the Baker Main Street Pilot Club informed them of scholarship opportunities. Sherraid Crespo spoke with them about 2-1-1 through ViaLink that could help identifying available resources for employment services and other needs.
Cynthia Grimes said, "I'm just so grateful for everyone who came out to share their knowledge with these students. To be able to present our future generation with information and tips on how to be better prepared for the real-world and real-life situations is such a fulfilling process. I'm so happy that we were able to do it. Thank you to all who came out and to everyone who had a hand in this."
