On Saturday, April 9, 2022, the Running with the Buffalos 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Walk was one for the record books!
Cynthia Grimes, director of the Baker Heritage Museum, said, "I missed this, and I wish we could have more of it."
Those feelings were met by all in attendance as Councilman Robert Young opened the ceremony with a heartfelt prayer toward the Lord, the runners, participants and sponsors who helped make the day a success. Councilman Young went on to challenge several parties to be involved in supporting their community. So far, Chief Dunn accepted the challenge, will the others arise to the challenge? We'll have to see come next year.
Over a hundred people participated and quite a few went home with the gold. The winners of the 5K Race for the male division were 1st place Paul Martin, 2nd Jacob Hegler, and 3rd place Chad Holman while the female division were 1st place Charde Carter, 2nd place Consuela Marshall, and 3rd place Kristin Martin. The winners of the 1 Mile Fun Walk were 1st place DaMiaya Dunn, 2nd place Tabrina Knighten, and 3rd place Taylah Bickham.
The Baker School challenge for the "Totally Lit Stroller Decorating Contest" that helped promote early childhood literacy was a great triumph. The winners of the contest were Baker Heights Pre-K teachers: Edna Harvey, Marissa Garner-James, and Cheryl Lewis with honorable mentions being Tina Walker, Precious Vincent, Leigh Glaser, and Shantell Eisley.
Impact Charter School also won 1st place with the school Spirit award by having the highest number of participants in the 1 Mile Fun Run. Dr. Eric Scott, the principal of Impact Charter School and the Impact Charter School team can be seen below holding their trophy.
This was just the first success in a line of accomplishments as the Buffalo Festival starts in full swing this Thursday, April 14. The City of Baker is so thankful to the sponsors, partners, committee members, volunteers and participants who made this event possible: Exxon Mobile, EBR Library, Care South WIC office, EBR Early Childhood Community Network, the North Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce, the Elvin Howard Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, Louisiana Spirit, LSU Communication Department, Baker Rotary-Interact Greater Baton Rouge Members.
