The City of Baker Communication Department sat down with Chief Carl Dunn to discuss Black History Month, his accomplishments and inspirations.
Chief Dunn, the first Black Chief of Police in the City of Baker, is a husband and father of 6 children and a Marine Corp Veteran. His Law Enforcement career reflects his commitment to service, with 24 Letters of Commendation, an Outstanding Officer of the Year Award, and three Chief’s Certificate of Commendation awards. Chief Dunn was the first African American Uniform Patrol Bureau Commander in Baton Rouge. While discussing law enforcement, being Chief of Police in the City of Baker, he told us “[he] recognizes the need for change and is glad to be a part of that.” Adding, “I am always glad to be able to be a part of something that is heading in the right direction.”
As we discussed his career, influences, and inspirations he told us that “The good impressions left by my various Supervisors throughout the 38 years I have spent in law enforcement that reinforced placing community first” played a big role in how he leads today, but his true inspiration was his father Adolphus “Doc” Dunn Sr. (6/3/1932- 9/17/2017). “I grew up watching and assisting him helping everyone in the community and never asking for any compensation. Being called Doc, short for doctor, he never faced anything broken that he couldn’t fix. He was always working and always very happy. He had aspirations of becoming a police officer, but after being told he was too small (he was under 150 pounds) he worked in the construction industry, for one company, for 57 years.”
Chief Dunn’s description of his father reminds us of Romans 12:9-13 - 9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. 10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another; 11 not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; 13 distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.
We thank you Chief Dunn for your commitment to the City of Baker and for sharing this wonderful memory of your father with us.
