Today signified the first step towards the future as AT&T announced the recent expansion of their award-winning fiber network to serve more than 800 additional residential and small business locations in Baker, specifically in the neighborhoods west of Myrtle Street Park.
Matt Adams, Regional Director of AT&T Louisiana, addressed AT&T staff, Mayor Waites, Senator Regina Ashford Barrow and State Representative Barbara Carpenter about the opportunities that AT&T fiber will bring.
"The pandemic has taught us many things and it has certainly become clear that fast, reliable broadband is essential for work, education, and entertainment. That's why we are continually expanding our fiber footprint and delivering ultra-fast internet that keeps residents and businesses connected," said Matt Adams.
Mayor Waites, Senator Regina Ashford Barrow and State Representative Barbara Carpenter all spoke on the benefits of connectivity for the city and state overall.
"Connectivity being available in many more homes and allowing citizens to be able to have access to the internet is very important. In light of the recent winter weather, it was important for students to be able to have internet access when returning to remote learning. It's also wonderful that there are plans that make connectivity affordable for every family," stated Senator Regina Ashford Barrow.
State Representative Barbara Carpenter said, "As a citizen of Baker, I look forward to having resources that will be able to provide citizens and students better connectivity. I'm excited for things to come and find that the beauty of this initiative will provide for everyone, no matter their financial situation, because if it isn't for everyone, it's all for naught."
Mayor Waites had this to add, "Thank you so much to AT&T for immersing yourself into the city of Baker and becoming a part of the Baker Chamber of Commerce. We can't thank AT&T enough for helping the city adapt and providing better broadband internet. We can all operate better with better connectivity!"
