Mayor Waites Statement – December 23, 2020, Regarding Community Violence and Crime
Today, I sincerely express my condolences and prayers to the members of our community that have been the victims of senseless violence.
I must reiterate, this is not the norm for the City of Baker, therefore we as citizens should not allow ourselves to become accustomed to it and we must never turn a blind eye toward those we know to be involved in such heinous, destructive acts.
The increased amount of criminal activity experienced over the past several weeks cannot and will not be overlooked or tolerated. As your Mayor I am prepared to take every step necessary to ensure a safe environment for all of our citizens, visitors and the surrounding communities.
I have been communicating my concerns and wishes clearly with everyone in our city’s leadership, as they along with me are united in our resolve to address this in a comprehensive manner. Today I am calling upon all of our elected and community leaders to join me in a concentrated commitment to take every proactive step we can collectively to stop this senseless violence.
Finally, I implore each and every citizen of Baker to be and remain vigilant; if you see something or know something related to criminal activity, immediately contact the Baker Police Department. And above all I pray that those among us who are on this destructive path would cease and seek another way. May we all look to Romans 12:21 to be our guide: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
