During the City Council meeting on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 the Baker City Council approved the resolution to transfer ownership of Lavey Lane from the State of Louisiana to the City of Baker.
As part of the resolution the agreement between the City of Baker and the State of Louisiana states that DOTD will make all needed repairs to Lavey Lane as a condition of the transfer.
You may ask why? The reason behind a road transfer between the State and the City is due to the fact that many state-owned roadways throughout greater East Baton Rouge Metro Area no longer fulfill their original role as rural roads. Now they’re busy city streets carrying cars, bikes, buses and freight trucks.
And in many instances these roads have not always been given as high a priority as roads such as the Interstate, when the State had to focus on allocating resources based on traffic volume. This, unfortunately, can result in poor long term safety outcomes as use changes while the community continues to grow and change around the road.
We have seen our community grow and as we move forward toward greater growth and economic expansion we recognize the need to manage these situations right here at home. This is where we have the ability to critically assess aspects of long term planning and development such as transportation needs. At home is where we can make the important decisions about things such as speed limits and wanted improvements. That is why ownership is key and this is where the road transfer program comes into play. By transferring ownership to the City of Baker we are now able to be the masters of our destiny with regard to key aspects of future growth and safety needs.
We are so excited to take another step in moving Baker forward together as we build for today and tomorrow!
