You may be saying, what? How is the City involved in my toilet flushing?
This is how. There are sewer lift stations that serve our community, which evacuate the waste from every residence and business which are powered by electricity..
What is that and why? You may ask.
Wastewater lift stations are pumps that move wastewater from a lower elevation to a higher elevation and without them the wastewater could not leave.
This is because sewers systems are sloped pipelines that take advantage of gravity to keep costs down. This type of pipe system is commonly referred to as a gravity pipeline.
In places where it’s necessary for wastewater to enter the pipe system from a lower elevation the only way the raw sewage can continue the journey towards a waste water treatment plant is being efficiently transported to a higher elevation. That requires a pump also known as a "lift station".
If that pump goes out, your toilet doesn't flush. So when we have bad storms and the electricity is interrupted and you find that your toilet isn't working correctly, like not flushing, this is why.
So, without further adieu, we are very excited to give you news on another of our Hazard Mitigation Projects with GOHSEP and FEMA, the Sewer Lift Stations Projects.
We are pleased to announce that our Public Works Department completed Phase 1 of the list of projects which laid the ground work for the installation of natural gas generators at each of the stations in the city!
Those locations are:
- South Magnolia Drive
- Two locations on College Avenue
- Plank Road
- Woodward Street
- Highway 19
- Groom Road
- Debra Street
Phase 1 of these projects was completed in the First Quarter of 2020 and we are gearing up to begin Phase 2 Installation now that we are in Phase 2 of reopening Louisiana!
Upon completion of the projects there will be a natural gas generator at each site which will supply power to the lift stations in the event of an electrical power failure, thus keeping your potty in peak performance mode!
Please join us in thanking our Public Works team for the hard work they do every day!
Great things are happening as we move Baker forward!
