Sign Installation to Rename a Section of KY 841 as I-265 Now Underway in Louisville

$1.9 million project to establish consistent interstate route and exit numbering from Louisville into Southern Indiana

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 28, 2026) – A more seamless interstate route around Louisville and Southern Indiana is taking shape as work begins to rename and re-sign a portion of KY 841 as Interstate 265 (Gene Snyder Freeway). It’s part of a project that includes new road signs and exit numbers to identify I-265 as a continuous route through Louisville, across the Ohio River and into Southern Indiana, providing motorists with clearer direction along the interstate loop.

A coordinated effort between the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the project will establish more consistent I-265 route signs and exit numbering throughout the states.

As part of the change, the existing Exit 10 on I-265 at the I-65 interchange will become Exit 0, marking the beginning of the I-265 loop. Exit numbers along the Kentucky portion of I-265 will then continue sequentially toward the Ohio River, with the portion of KY 841 (Gene Snyder Freeway) near the East End Tunnel and Lewis and Clark Bridge renamed and re-signed as I-265, creating a continuous loop.

Across the river, I-265 exit numbering will continue sequentially with new signage INDOT has installed along the Southern Indiana loop to the I-265/I-64 interchange, now Exit 41A/B.

In Louisville, the remaining portion of KY 841 west/southwest of the KY 841 and I-65 interchange, extending to U.S. 31W (Dixie Highway), will continue to be designated as KY 841. The existing exit numbers on the remaining section of KY 841 will be removed, with route names and route numbers identifying all interchanges.

Contract crews completed preliminary work this summer, and full installation is expected to begin on or after Monday, Aug. 31, on I-265 North and South (Gene Snyder Freeway) between mile markers 26 and 29 (near KY 3084/Old Henry Road).

Work will require intermittent short-length, single-lane closures on I-265 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Additional lane, shoulder, and ramp closures will be necessary to replace signage in project areas as work progresses along the Gene Snyder Freeway. Details regarding upcoming traffic impacts will be shared when available.

Eden Fence, Inc., of Elizabethtown, KY, will complete the work under a $1.9 million contract. The project is expected to be completed by the Summer of 2027. Motorists should obey work zone traffic restrictions, and plan ahead when traveling.

The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. For the latest traffic and travel updates across the Commonwealth of Kentucky, visit goky.ky.gov. Information specific to District 5 counties is also available on Facebook and X.
