District 7 Crews Actively Treating Roads as Winter Storm Arrives

Motorists urged to avoid unnecessary travel as conditions expected to become hazardous

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 24, 2026) – Snow and ice have moved into the region, and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 7 highway crews are actively treating and plowing roads across the district as a significant winter storm begins to impact central Kentucky.

District 7 crews remain fully engaged in snow and ice operations with a focus on keeping major routes passable as snowfall continues.

This remains a statewide winter weather event, with hazardous travel conditions expected to persist through Monday. Snowfall, sleet and ice accumulation are creating slick roads, particularly on bridges, overpasses and untreated surfaces. Cold temperatures may also reduce the effectiveness of road salt in some areas.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel while crews continue snow and ice removal operations.

KYTC snow and ice response follows a priority system to maximize safety and mobility. Crews work 12-hour shifts and treat roadways in the following order:

  • Priority A: Major through routes and heavily traveled roads
  • Priority B: Important but less-traveled state routes
  • Priority C: All other routes

Snow priority maps for each county are available at SnowKY.ky.gov.

Continuous snowfall will quickly cover plowed and treated roads, and it will take time to reach lower-volume routes. While crews will work throughout the storm, many roads may remain snow-covered until the storm moves out of the area.

If travel is unavoidable, motorists should slow down, increase following distance, use high-volume routes when possible, and carry an emergency car kit. Drivers should maintain a safe distance from snowplows and never pass them on the shoulder. Avoid distractions and follow Kentucky’s Quick Clearance Law, which requires vehicles involved in non-injury crashes to move to the shoulder.

Do not call 911 for road conditions.
