Widening and Safety Improvement Project on Bristow Road/Shaw Road (KY 536) in Kenton County Scheduled to Begin Monday, Dec. 1

Project will improve safety by adding two roundabouts, four lanes of vehicular travel and multi-use paths

COVINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 25, 2025) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of a widening and safety improvement project on Bristow Road/Shaw Road (KY 536) in Kenton County.

Crews will be working on KY 536 beginning at Williamswoods Drive (mile point 2.54) extending to Madison Pike (KY 17) (mile point 4.47), a distance of 1.93 miles.

The project includes the following improvements:

  • Widening throughout the project area from two lanes of vehicular traffic, to four lanes to reduce congestion and improve traffic efficiency.
  • A new alignment will be created north of the current KY 536.
  • A new bridge will be constructed over the existing Independence Road. This portion will tie back in to the current KY 536 at mile point 3.9.
  • A multi-use path will be built on both sides of KY 536 to improve bicycle/pedestrian connectivity.
  • Curb/gutter improvements along with storm sewer and drainage work

Additionally, two roundabouts will be built to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and increase safety. These roundabouts will be located at the following intersections:

  • The intersection of KY 536 and Williamswoods Drive
  • On the newly constructed portion of KY 536 west of Independence Road

Most construction activities will occur off the existing roadway on a newly constructed alignment north of current KY 536, which is expected to minimize traffic impacts for motorists traveling through this portion of the corridor. The most significant traffic impacts are anticipated during construction of the roundabout at the KY 536 and Williamswoods Drive intersection, where lane closures and shifting traffic patterns should be expected. We will provide an update once that phase of work begins.

"Our number one priority is building infrastructure that is safe for all road users. Adding roundabouts and multi-use paths on this corridor is just another example of that commitment to improving safety and connectivity in a rapidly growing area of Kenton County," said Bob Yeager, KYTC District 6 Chief District Engineer.

Clearing operations are expected to begin on Monday, Dec. 1, and will continue throughout the winter months. This work may involve several traffic impacts for equipment moving in and out of the work zone.

This project will require traffic switches and other new traffic patterns. Prior to these occurring, KYTC will issue a press release and social media update. Message boards will also be in place to warn motorists of any upcoming traffic pattern changes.

Eaton Asphalt Paving Co. Inc. is contracted to perform the $28.7 million project on behalf of KYTC. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by Nov. 1, 2027.

KY 536 Corridor Improvements

This project is part of a larger series of projects - aimed at improving the KY 536 corridor from U.S. 42 in Boone County, to KY 17 in Kenton County.

Three of those projects have been completed, two are ongoing.

The KY 536 (Mt. Zion Road) interchange improvement project was completed in October 2023. This project included a double crossover diamond (DCD) interchange at KY 536 and I-71/75, widening the road from three lanes to nine lanes of vehicular travel, as well as constructing a shared-use path on the north side of KY 536, and a sidewalk on the south side.

The KY 536 improvement project from U.S. 42 to Tiburon Drive was completed in October 2020. This project included widening from two lanes to four lanes to improve traffic congestion, adding a multi-use path and two roundabouts to improve safety.

The KY 536 improvement project from U.S. 25 (Dixie Highway) to KY 1303 (Bristow Road) was completed June 2024. The project included widening the road from two lanes to four lanes of vehicular traffic, a multi-use path built on both sides of KY 536, two roundabouts, traffic signal improvements and drainage improvements. It also includes widening the bridge deck to the west of Toebben Drive, and adding a right turn lane on Toebben Drive.

The KY 536 improvement project from KY 1303 to Williamswoods Drive began in April 2024. The project includes widening the road from two lane to four lanes of vehicular traffic, a multi-use path built on both sides of KY 536, widening an overpass bridge over a nearby railroad, two roundabouts and drainage improvements. This project is expected to be completed by Spring 2027.

An additional project aimed at improving safety and connectivity on KY 1303 near KY 536 began in Summer 2024. The project will widen KY 1303 from south of Beechgrove Elementary School to the soon-to-be constructed roundabout at KY 1303 and KY 536. This project is expected to be completed Summer 2026.

Project schedules are subject to change due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
