Carter Road Bridge Repair to Begin Next Week

Work will require traffic restrictions on US 60/both highways

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (July 16, 2025) More than a year after being struck and damaged by a commercial vehicle, repairs on the Carter Road bridge over U.S. 60 in Owensboro are scheduled to begin next week. This work will require traffic restrictions on both U.S. 60 and Carter Road.

On June 7, 2024 the Carter Road (KY 2698) bridge over the U.S. 60 Wendell Ford Expressway was struck by a vehicle, damaging one of the bridge's support beams. Inspection of the structure found that the bridge could be reopened until repairs could be made, with lane restrictions in place along the shoulder of the bridge. Due to the type of damage, a quick fix was not possible, with the damaged beam having to be specifically designed and fabricated to match the structural needs of the bridge.

Crews will begin placing signage for the upcoming work tomorrow, Thursday, July  17. Construction is set to begin on Monday, July 21.

During construction, westbound U.S. 60 will be reduced to one lane from the 13 mm to 12.3 mm. There will also be additional lane restrictions on the northbound side of the Carter Road Bridge.

When necessary during construction, both east and westbound lanes of U.S. 60 could be temporarily be blocked from the 12.3-13 mm. During those blockages, traffic in both directions will be diverted down the off ramp to Carter Road and then back onto U.S. 60 via the adjacent on-ramp. When traffic is detoured, personnel will be flagging the intersection between the on-ramps to keep traffic flowing.

Repairs to the bridge are slated to be completed by mid-September.
