U.S. 127/Vandalay Drive Intersection Improvement Project Underway in Franklin County

Project includes new roundabout, added capacity, and road extensions

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 8, 2025) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) announces construction is underway on the U.S. 127/Vandalay Drive intersection improvement project in Franklin County. This project will enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and support future growth in the area.

The scope of the project includes constructing a new roundabout at the intersection of Vandalay Drive and Westridge Drive; extending Vandalay Drive to Limestone Drive to create a direct connection to KY 676 (East-West Connector); extending Vandalay Drive to U.S. 127 near the I-64/U.S. 127 interchange; and adding dual receiving lanes to improve left-turn movements from U.S. 127 onto Westridge Drive.

A roundabout is a one-way circular intersection in which traffic moves counterclockwise around a center island. Roundabouts do not have traffic signals or stop signs, which allows for continuous traffic flow and increased vehicle capacity.

Crashes at intersections account for about 45% of all crashes nationwide, so enhancing the vehicle flow at these junctures is critical to reducing the risk of overall crashes. Roundabouts are a proven safety countermeasure to accomplish this goal. In communities where roundabouts have replaced traditional intersections, crash statistics show dramatic drops:

  • 37 % reduction in all crashes
  • 90 % reduction in fatal crashes
  • 75 % reduction in injury crashes
  • 40 % reduction in pedestrian injuries

Motorists should expect changing traffic patterns, lane shifts, and lane closures as construction progresses. Signs notifying drivers of the work are placed in the area. Additional updates regarding traffic impacts will be shared via KYTC District 5’s weekly Roadshow report.

ATS Construction of Lexington, KY, was awarded the $3.2 million contract. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2026.
