Final Traffic Changes This Weekend for I-65/KY 480 Ahead of New Interchange Configuration Opening Monday, June 23, in Bullitt County

KY 480 and I-65 ramp to close for weekend work; new double crossover diamond to enhance driver safety

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 19, 2025) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of planned closures this weekend as work soon concludes on the I-65/KY 480 (Cedar Grove Road) interchange improvement project in Bullitt County. The reconstruction will conclude in the opening of the new double crossover diamond interchange (DCD) next Monday, June 23 — a design that enhances safety and efficiency by eliminating left turns across opposing traffic.

Weekend closures and traffic impacts:

  • Beginning Friday, June 20, at 8 a.m., the on-ramp from eastbound KY 480 to southbound I-65 will close temporarily for milling and paving. The on-ramp is expected to reopen by 3 p.m. and will remain open during the weekend closure of KY 480.
  • Beginning Friday, June 20, at 7 p.m., through Monday, June 23, at 5 a.m., through traffic on KY 480 will be closed in both directions at the I-65 interchange:
    • Eastbound KY 480 will be closed just east of the I-65 South on-ramp.
    • Westbound KY 480 will be closed just west of the I-65 North on-ramp.
    • Only right turns will be permitted for drivers exiting I-65:
      • Northbound I-65 traffic can only turn east onto KY 480.
      • Southbound I-65 traffic can only turn west onto KY 480.
  • Detours:
    • Drivers on KY 480 eastbound attempting to access I-65 South or continue east will be directed to KY 61 south to I-65 North (Exit 114), then to KY 480 eastbound.
    • Drivers on KY 480 westbound will be directed to KY 61 north to I-65 South (Exit 117), then loop back to KY 480 westbound.

This weekend's work is part of the $18.74 million project to reconstruct the I-65/KY 480 interchange as a DCD interchange, enhancing safety and access to Cedar Grove Business Park and the surrounding area. The weekend closure of KY 480 will allow contract crews to complete median and curb connections, paving, final striping, and activation of the new traffic signals for the DCD interchange. The final DCD interchange configuration will be open to traffic by Monday, June 23, at 5 a.m.

A Double Crossover Diamond (DCD) is an interchange with two signalized intersections, where traffic between the intersections crosses over to the left side of the roadway. As vehicles exit the interchange, they return to the right side of the road. This design allows for vehicles to turn left onto and off freeway ramps without stopping or crossing opposing lanes of traffic. Right turns on and off freeway ramps occur either before or after the crossover intersections.

Motorists should follow posted signage, seek alternate routes, and use caution when traveling through the new traffic configuration.
