Bridge project to result in one-lane traffic until mid-November on KY 52 at Estill-Madison county line

JACKSON, Ky.  A bridge replacement project scheduled to get underway next week will result in one-lane traffic for the next nine months on KY 52 at the Estill-Madison county line.

The bridge over Drowning Creek, built in 1957 and used by more than 8,200 vehicles per day, will be replaced with a modern structure.

Installation of traffic control is scheduled to begin Tuesday, April 29, with lane closures planned afterwards.

Alternating one-lane traffic with a width of 11 feet, controlled by temporary signals, will be maintained while the project is ongoing. The westbound lane (from Irvine to Richmond) will be closed first. Later, the closure will be reversed and the eastbound side (from Richmond toward Irvine) will be shut down. No wide load detour will be posted.

While the closures are underway, a queue warning system will be in place to alert drivers to the presence of slowed or stopped traffic at the bridge. The system consists of a series of sensors and variable message boards. The content of the message boards changes automatically based on the information provided by the sensors.

Drivers should slow down and pay attention to signage as they approach the bridge. Long, steep hills are present on either side of Drowning Creek, so motorists should keep their speed in check and be alert to changing road and travel conditions.

The existing bridge is rated in poor condition and has posted weight limits of between 39 and 60 tons, depending on the vehicle type. It is located at milepoint 0.0 in Estill County and milepoint 22.6 in Madison County.

The project is scheduled for completion by Nov. 15.
