Temporary Closure of O'Hara Road (KY 3147) Entrance and CVG Airplane Viewing Area from Donaldson Highway (KY 236) Beginning on Monday, April 21
Temporary two-week closure needed for cement stabilization, detour via Turfway Road (KY 717)
COVINGTON, Ky. (April 16, 2025) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists that the entrance to O’Hara Road (KY 3147) from Donaldson Highway (KY 236) (at the 0.6 mile point on KY 3147) and the nearby CVG Airplane Viewing Area (near the entrance at the 1.52 mile point) on Donaldson Highway in Boone County will temporarily close beginning around 8 a.m. on Monday, April 21.
The two-week closure is necessary to allow crews to perform cement stabilization work as part of the ongoing Donaldson Highway widening project. This work will enhance pavement durability and provide a more stable foundation for the final road design. Both the O’Hara Road entrance and the CVG Airplane Viewing Area are expected to reopen on Monday, May 5.
During the closure, motorists can access O’Hara Road via Turfway Road (KY 717). Message boards are in place to notify the public of the upcoming closures.

Project Background: a widening and safety improvement project on Donaldson Highway between Houston Road (KY 842) and Mineola Pike (KY 3076) began March 2023. The project includes widening a two-mile stretch of road to five lanes with curb and gutter, including two through-lanes in each direction with a center turn lane. A sidewalk and shared-use path will also be added to improve connectivity for all road users.
“Currently Donaldson Highway experiences bouts of congestion from several businesses, schools, residentials and commercial development in the area.” said Bob Yeager, Chief District Engineer of KYTC’s District 6 Office. “This project will help mitigate congestion, provide better access for pedestrians and overall improve safety,” he said.
The $33.2 million project was awarded to Riegler Blacktop of Florence, KY. The project has a completion date of September 2025.
