TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Travel Lanes on John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge Temporarily Reopening by Friday, April 4

Partial lane closures to remain in place this week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 31, 2025) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists that contractors will temporarily reopen recently closed travel lanes on Interstate 65 South on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge in Louisville this week to improve traffic flow during the preliminary stages of a bridge joint replacement project.

During preliminary work on the project, contractors were able to make temporary repairs to a damaged expansion joint on the Indiana approach of the bridge. The left three lanes of the bridge were initially closed at that location in late February as a necessary safety precaution.

The recent repairs will allow the closed lanes to reopen by rush hour Friday, April 4. The following traffic control steps are necessary to safely reopen the lanes:

  • Currently, the left three lanes remain closed. Two lanes will reopen, and the leftmost lane will remain closed from Tuesday, April 1, until Friday, April 4.
  • On Friday, April 4, the closure will shift to the left two lanes to allow for the removal of construction equipment, then all lanes will fully reopen.

The full bridge joint replacement project remains underway as contractors are currently fabricating expansion joints. The joints are expected to arrive in July when full construction is scheduled to begin. The project is expected to be completed by April 2026, with intermittent lane closures to be anticipated throughout the duration of construction. KYTC will provide additional details on future lane closures and traffic impacts as they become available.

Expansion joints are a component of the bridge deck, or travel surface, that allows for thermal expansion and contraction due to changes in weather to prevent concrete from cracking.

The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
