TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Lane Closures on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge in Louisville

$6.9 million project to replace bridge's expansion joints underway

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 27, 2025) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of extended lane closures on Interstate 65 South on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge beginning today, Feb. 27, in Louisville.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., the left three lanes of the bridge, which carries I-65 South over the Ohio River, will close. Three lanes will remain open, allowing traffic to continue southbound on I-65.

The lane closures are a necessary safety precaution due to damaged expansion joints as crews prepare for a long-planned project, now underway, to replace all expansion joints on the bridge. Major construction is set to begin this summer. Expansion joints are a component of the bridge deck, or travel surface, that allows for thermal expansion and contraction due to changes in weather to prevent concrete from cracking.

Fabrication of the expansion joints is underway, and Hall Contracting of Kentucky Inc. is carrying out the joint replacement project under a $6.9 million contract. The project is expected to be completed by April 2026, with intermittent lane closures to be anticipated throughout the duration of construction. KYTC will provide additional details on future lane closures and traffic impacts as they become available.

Motorists traveling southbound on I-65 from Indiana should plan for merging traffic, expect delays, or seek alternate routes by using navigation apps such as Waze.
