Gov. Beshear Announces $118 Million I-64 Widening and Improvement Project in Shelby County
Major infrastructure investment to enhance safety, reduce congestion and support growth
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 26, 2025) – Today, Gov. Andy Beshear announced a major infrastructure investment to enhance safety, improve mobility and foster economic growth in Shelby County. This $118 million project along Interstate 64 will increase capacity, upgrade a key interchange and modernize bridges, ensuring a more efficient and reliable transportation network for motorists.
The three-year project includes widening and pavement upgrades of an 11-mile section of I-64, along with the reconstruction of the KY 53 interchange, the rebuilding of three overpass bridges and the widening of four existing I-64 bridges. These improvements will enhance daily travel while also supporting future growth in the region.
“Transportation investments like this continue to make our New Kentucky Home a better, safer and more connected state that will support families, businesses and communities for generations to come,” said Gov. Beshear.
A key component of the project involves widening a six-mile stretch of I-64 between Exit 32 (KY 55) and the Shelbyville weigh station (mile points 32.29 to 38.3), increasing capacity from four to six lanes. Upon completion, the I-64 corridor from Clark Station Road to KY 395 (Waddy Road) in Shelby County will feature three lanes in each direction, improving mobility and reducing congestion.
Pavement upgrades on nearly five miles of I-64, from KY 1848 (Buck Creek Road) to Exit 32 at KY 55 (mile points 27.88 to 32.40), are scheduled to begin this summer. During peak travel hours, two lanes will remain open in each direction. Drivers should anticipate changing traffic patterns, lane shifts and periodic lane closures as work progresses.
As part of the project, three bridges over I-64 will be replaced: KY 2861 (Zaring Mill Road), KY 53 (Mt. Eden Road), and KY 1790 (Hooper Station Road). Traffic will remain open during the KY 53 (Mt. Eden Road) bridge replacement. Over the next two years of construction, a 90-day closure will be necessary for the KY 2861 (Zaring Mill Road) bridge and a 120-day closure for the KY 1790 (Hooper Station Road) bridge.
The I-64 and KY 53 interchange will also undergo a major redesign, replacing the existing loop ramp with a diamond interchange. This new design, similar to the I-64 Exit 32 interchange, will enhance safety and improve traffic flow. As part of the interchange reconstruction portion of the project, KY 53 (Mt. Eden Road) will be widened from St. Regis Road to KY 1790 (Hooper Station Road).
The interstate project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2027. More details, including project timelines and traffic impacts, will be shared online as work progresses. Motorists are encouraged to sign up for email alerts regarding weekly traffic impacts related to the project.
When complete, the upgrades will enhance traffic flow along the regional interstate corridor and commuter route that also serves several industrial areas, including the Shelbyville Battery Manufacturing site where the largest economic development project in Shelby County’s history is under way to create more than 1,500 skilled, high-tech jobs.
