KYTC District 1 Winter Storm Update for Feb. 20, 2025 at 4:15 p.m.
Road conditions improve as crews continue snow removal efforts
PADUCAH, Ky. (Feb. 20, 2025) – Road conditions are steadily improving across the district.
Early this morning, many previously snow-covered roads had developed icy patches due to sub-zero wind chills. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 crews quickly resumed treating and plowing state highways, working throughout the day to clear as many road miles as possible.
Several Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 teams remain on duty this afternoon, focusing on patrolling and clearing “C” routes. Others have wrapped for the night.
All snow removal operations will conclude before dark, pausing overnight due to extremely cold temperatures. With temperatures expected to drop well below 20 degrees, salt treatments will be ineffective.
Frigid temperatures are expected to continue through Friday morning, but a warming trend is forecasted for the weekend and into next week.
Given the potential for refreezing on roadways overnight, the cabinet urges motorists to avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is necessary, drivers are encouraged to drive slowly, dress in layers, and pack an emergency kit that includes a blanket, extra clothing, jumper cables, a phone charger, flashlight, water, snacks, and other essential supplies in case of an emergency.
Motorists should also slow down when approaching bridges, overpasses and other shaded areas that often freeze first.
The District 1 Snow and Ice Team aims to complete all snow removal efforts by the end of business Friday.
