Work Zone Lane Restrictions on Interstate 24 Ohio River Bridge in Paducah Start Monday, March 3

IDOT-led rehab project will span multiple years

PADUCAH, Ky. (Feb. 18, 2025)  The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) plans work zone lane restrictions on the Interstate 24 Ohio River Bridge between Paducah and Metropolis at the Kentucky-Illinois State Line, starting Monday, March 3, weather permitting.

The three-year I-24 Ohio River Bridge Rehab Project is being led by IDOT. Lane restrictions will continue in 2025 until October 14. Project dates for 2026 and 2027 will be announced by IDOT at a later date.

Work will include replacement of expansion joints and deck overlay, structural steel repairs, bridge painting, and other concrete repairs.

During this construction season, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Concrete barriers will be installed across the length of the bridge and width restrictions will be in effect.

Motorists can expect delays during peak hours and should consider alternative routes to avoid the area.

In a collaborative effort, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is working alongside IDOT to prepare drivers for the upcoming work zone.

IDOT will implement a smart work zone system equipped with message boards to assist in alerting drivers to traffic conditions. This system uses real-time data collected by sensors placed along the roadway to deliver timely and relevant messages. Additionally, IDOT and KYTC encourage drivers to use a dynamic “zipper” merge when entering the work zone, in an effort to minimize queue lengths and improve traffic flow into the lane closure area.

Motorists should pay attention to signs and merge when directed.

KYTC will reduce the speed limit to 55 mph on westbound I-24 from the 7.5 MM and leading up to the I-24 Ohio River Bridge.

The entire project is expected to be completed by September 2027.

As a reminder, due to weight, height and width restrictions, large commercial vehicles and semi-trucks are prohibited from crossing the U.S. 45 Ohio River "Brookport" Bridge between Paducah and Brookport.
