Public Comments for Temporary Riverfront Commons Trail Accepted Through Feb. 23
To ensure inclusion for consideration, comments must be sent directly to Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project Team
COVINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 13, 2025) – To ensure public safety during Brent Spence Bridge Corridor (BSBC) Project construction, a temporary approximately 60-month closure and detour is required for approximately 0.8 miles of the Riverfront Commons Trail beginning this summer. The 30-day comment period on the proposed detour path and construction is now underway and ends on February 23. Comments must be submitted to the project team to ensure they are part of the official public record.
During the temporary closure, continuity for trail users will be maintained on an approximately 1-mile detour route (0.2 miles longer than the existing trail) constructed mainly along Rivercenter Boulevard, West Third Street and Highway/Crescent Avenue in Covington. The temporary detour will meet design standards for safety and operations as outlined by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). This includes a 2-foot-wide striped buffer to separate bicycles from traffic where warranted, and/or a physical buffer using fencing, concrete barriers or other methods.
The detour path along West Third Street from the existing BSB to Highway/Crescent Avenue, and then from the intersection of Third Street and Highway/Crescent Avenue to the levee gate will be a new permanent shared use path to fulfill the project’s environmental commitment to connect Goebel Park, Simon Kenton Way and Bullock Street to the River Commons Trail at the gate. Proposed maps, illustrations and more detailed information can be seen here.
When the project’s companion bridge is substantially complete, the original trail route will be restored and reopened. Intermittent closures within the same 0.8-mile trail section will then be required to ensure safety until the entire BSBC project is complete.
To ensure inclusion for consideration, comments on the proposed trail detour path and construction must be provided directly to KYTC Project Manager Stacee Hans at stacee.hans@ky.gov by February 23, 2025.
