District 12 Prepares for Winter Weather Impacts Starting Tonight
Several counties now upgraded to Winter Storm Warning
Pikeville, KY (Jan.18, 2025) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 12 is closely monitoring the forecast winter weather expected to begin tonight and continue through midday Monday, January 20, 2025. Several counties in District 12, including Pike, Floyd, Martin, Johnson, Letcher, and Knott, have been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning, with snow accumulations expected to range from 3 to 5 inches, potentially more in higher elevations.
Crews have already been out treating roads this morning to address freezing rain and black ice, particularly in Johnson and Floyd counties. However, due to the ongoing rain, pre-treatment with brine ahead of tonight’s snow is not possible, as the rain would wash away any applied treatment.
Snowfall is expected to begin this evening, and crews will mobilize starting at 10 PM to begin snow and ice operations, focusing on high-priority routes. Motorists are advised that while snow is falling, it will be challenging to keep roads clear, so travelers should expect snow-covered roads and difficult driving conditions.
As snow continues through Monday, KYTC urges the public to plan travel accordingly and give crews ample room to work. Winter weather operations will focus on keeping roads as safe as possible, but due to the intensity of the snow, roadways may remain covered during periods of heavy snowfall.
Safety Tips:
• Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
• If travel is necessary, slow down and allow extra time for your trip.
• Give plows and other equipment plenty of room to work safely.
