KYTC District 1 Winter Weather Update for Jan. 6, 2025 at 10:15 a.m.
Crews spot-treating only where needed
PADUCAH, Ky. (Jan. 6, 2025) – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 snowfighters are getting some help from the sun and wind today in their efforts to clear accumulated ice and snow from area highways.
Crews across the district have been actively spot-treating trouble spots including bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas Monday morning. Highway maintenance crews from areas with less ice and snow accumulation also assisted neighboring counties, which were more heavily affected, by removing fallen trees and limbs from roadways.
Crews in Ballard, Crittenden, Hickman, Livingston, Lyon, McCracken, and Trigg counties are still out spot-treating roadways as needed.
The National Weather Service (NWS) Winter Weather Advisory issued for the region ends at noon. While most state roads appear clear at the moment, motorists are urged to travel only if absolutely necessary. Even treated and plowed pavement could be slick, especially on less-traveled highways.
Arctic cold weather is also going to stay around for a while. The latest NWS forecast indicates lows are expected to stay in the teens until mid-day Thursday, with wind chill factors as low as 10 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday during morning commutes. Anyone who ventures out should gear up to be fully prepared for the extreme cold, pack an emergency car kit, and be sure their vehicle is functioning properly to reduce the likelihood of becoming stranded during the cold.
Maintain a safe distance from snowplows and other heavy highway equipment and do not pass snowplows on the shoulder.
The U.S. 45 Ohio River "Brookport" Bridge in Paducah is closed until further notice. Motorists should detour via the Interstate 24 Ohio River Bridge. KYTC District 1 will provide a timely update when it reopens.
